Legends of Tono reminds me a lot of Ivan Turgenev’s A Sportsman’s Sketches (), which was a series of short stories about his experiences among Russia’s “folk,” the serfs.
Like Yanagita, this Russian realist author (i.e. an author who relays the events of the people he meets without embellishment) wanted to show the everyday life.
